Roland Barthes bol francúzsky literát, esejista, filozof a semiológ, jedna z ústredných postáv štrukturalizmu.

Kontinuálnou témou jeho diela bola povaha znaku, najmä literárneho, pričom odmietal tak mimetickú teóriu znaku, ako aj teóriu, podľa ktorej je literatúra autonómna v zmysle slobodnej subjektívnej tvorby. Barthes sa domnieval, že spisovateľ netvorí imaginatívnou vôľou, ale iba reaguje na spoločenské štruktúry, z ktorých odvodzuje svoje impulzy v podobe symbolov, ktoré možno kodifikovať a klasifikovať novou vedou zvanou sémiológia.
