Robert Burns bol významný škótsky básnik, ktorý prispel k romantizácii Škótska. Jeho básne sa väčšinou zachovali v podobe piesní – svoju poéziu písal k existujúcim melódiám, ktorým takýmto spôsobom zabezpečil „nesmrteľnosť“. Hoci vedel trochu hrať na husliach, nebol hudobníkom.
