Tertulián bol rímsky právnik, cirkevný otec a spisovateľ.

Vystupoval v Ríme ako rečník na súdoch. Po prijatí kresťanstva sa okolo roku 195 vrátil späť do Kartága. Neskôr sa zblížil s montanistami a dostal sa do rozporu s cirkvou. Zdá sa, že na konci života založil zvláštnu sektu tertulliáncov.

Tertillianovo myslenie sa vyznačovalo tendenciou k paradoxom. Opovrhoval všetkým „pohanským“, osobitne pri svojej prenikavej kritike gréckej filozofie. Podľa Tertulliana je všetko skutočné telesné, aj Boh. Z taktických dôvodov obhajoval náboženskú slobodu.

Tertulianus odmieta filozofiu . S istou dávkou provokácie však zdôrazňuje absurdnosť kresťanskej viery, ak ju posudzujeme z hľadiska pojmového myslenia. Výrok Verím, pretože je to nezmyselné sa síce Tertullianovi len pripisuje, ale výstižne vyjadruje jeho základný postoj. Wikipedia
