Majster Eckhart[1] bol nemecký filozof, teológ, mystik a dominikánsky mních. Jeho nemecké kázne určené hlavne rehoľniciam mali veľký vplyv na mestskú zbožnosť neskorého stredoveku a na vývoj nemeckého jazyka.

Prednášal v Paríži, Štrasburgu a v Kolíne. Zaslúžil sa o vytvorenie nemeckého filozofického jazyka. Eckhart je predstaviteľom apofatickej teológie.

Majster Eckhart stojí filozoficky v tradícii novoplatonizmu, označujú ho dokonca niekedy za „azda najväčšieho zo všetkých novoplatonikov“.

Jadrom Eckhartovej metafyziky sú otázky povahy existencie Boha: Eckhart rozlišuje esse , ktoré je trvalé a nemenné, a esse hoc et hoc , ktoré sa neustále mení. Svoju tézu, esse est Deus , neskôr nahradzuje chápaním Boha ako myslenia .

Človek sa podľa Eckahrta vyznačuje tým, že má zo všetkých stvorených entít najbližšie k Bohu; ľudská duša má božský prazáklad a vyznačuje sa tým, že je schopná myslieť: toto myslenie je božská iskra privádzajúca človeka k mystickému zjednoteniu sa s Bohom a dodávajúca človeku istú mieru autonómie v oblasti poznania a mravnosti. The quickest means to bring us to perfection is suffering; none enjoy everlasting blessedness more than those who share with Christ the bitterest pangs.
