Theresa Mayová je členkou Konzervatívnej a unionistickej strany.

V prvej a druhej vláde Davida Camerona pôsobila od roku 2010 ako ministerka vnútra. Po Cameronovej rezignácii, vzhľadom na výsledky referenda o vystúpení Spojeného kráľovstva z Európskej únie ju kráľovná Alžbeta II. 13. júla 2016 vymenovala do funkcie premiérky.Theresa Mayová oznámila v apríli 2017 predčasné parlamentné voľby v očakávaní volebného úspechu a silnejšej pozície pri vyjednávaní podmienok odchodu Británie z Európskej únie . Výsledky volieb v júni však ukázali, že i keď vyhrala a začalo druhé obdobie vlády od 11. júna 2017, stratila väčšinu v snemovni.
