V matematike sa zaoberal predovšetkým teóriou čísel, teóriou množín, teóriou miery, ergodickou teóriou, dynamickými systémami a algebraickou topológiou. Po druhej svetovej vojne sa viac než rigoróznou matematikou zaoberal skôr rôznymi špekulatívnymi úvahami, napríklad ohľadne aplikácií matematiky vo fyzike, či biológii.
