Reinhold Niebuhr: Citáty v angličtine

“I wouldn't judge a man by the presuppositions of his life, but only by the fruits of his life.”

Reinhold Niebuhr

The Mike Wallace Interview (1958)
Kontext: My personal attitude toward atheists is the same attitude that I have toward Christians, and would be governed by a very orthodox text: "By their fruits shall ye know them." I wouldn't judge a man by the presuppositions of his life, but only by the fruits of his life. And the fruits — the relevant fruits — are, I'd say, a sense of charity, a sense of proportion, a sense of justice. And whether the man is an atheist or a Christian, I would judge him by his fruits, and I have therefore many agnostic friends.

“God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Reinhold Niebuhr

One of the most commonly quoted forms.
The Serenity Prayer (c. 1942)
Varianta: Lord, grant me the strength to accept the things I cannot change,
he courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

“comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable”

“A Nazi social philosophy has been a covert presumption of the whole Oxford group enterprise from the very beginning.”

Reinhold Niebuhr

Zdroj: Christianity and Power Politics (1936), Chapter 29: "Hitler and Buchman"

“There is no level of moral achievement upon which man can have or actually has an easy conscience.”

Reinhold Niebuhr

vol. 1, p. 131
The Nature and Destiny of Man: A Christian Interpretation (1941)

“God, give us grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed, courage
to change the things which should be changed,
and the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.”

Reinhold Niebuhr

Niebuhr's preferred form, as declared by his widow
The Serenity Prayer (c. 1942)
Varianta: God, give us grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, courage to change the things which should be changed, and the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.

“The whole art of politics consists in directing rationally the irrationalities of men.”

Reinhold Niebuhr

As quoted in obituary '"Reinhold Niebuhr Is Dead; Protestant Theologian, 78" by Alden Whitman in The New York Times (2 June 1971) http://www.nytimes.com/packages/html/books/niebuhr.pdf
