Leonard Cohen citáty

Leonard Norman Cohen bol kanadský básnik, prozaik a pesničkár. Bol jedným z najvýznamnejších a najvplyvnejších autorov piesní v angličtine v 20. storočí. Svojou hudobnou kariérou do veľkej miery zatienil svoju predchádzajúcu kariéru básnika a spisovateľa, no napriek tomu aj po prerazení v hudobnom priemysle sporadicky vydával svoju poéziu.

Spočiatku Cohenove piesne vychádzali z folkovej hudby, no od sedemdesiatych rokov bolo cítiť prevažujúci vplyv popu a kabaretnej hudby. Od 80. rokov spieval s preňho typickým hlbokým basom, s podporou ženských vokálov v pozadí.

Cohenove piesne sú často citovo hlboké so zložitými textami s množstvom metafor a iných básnických prostriedkov.

Wikipedia

Leonard Cohen: Citáty v angličtine

“But let's not talk of love or chains and things we can't untie,
your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.”

"Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye" · Duet with Judy Collins on Soundstage (January 1976) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVJImYNGqwk
Songs of Leonard Cohen (1967)
Kontext: I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm,
Your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm,
Yes many loved before us, I know that we are not new,
In city and in forest they smiled like me and you,
But let's not talk of love or chains and things we can't untie,
your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.

“A heavy burden lifted from my soul,
I heard that love was out of my control.”

“I'm crazy for love but
I'm not coming on.
I'm just paying my rent everyday
In the Tower Of Song.”

"Tower Of Song"
I'm Your Man (1988)
Kontext: My friends are gone and
My hair is grey.
I ache in the places where I used to play.
And I'm crazy for love but
I'm not coming on.
I'm just paying my rent everyday
In the Tower Of Song.

“And you want to travel with her,
And you want to travel blind,
And you know that she will trust you,
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.”

"Suzanne" - Isle of Wight performance (1970) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_56ep729TE - Live in London (2008) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snMOmHzgssk
Songs of Leonard Cohen (1967)
Kontext: Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river.
You can hear the boats go by,
You can spend the night beside her,
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there,
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China.
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover.
And you want to travel with her,
And you want to travel blind,
And you know that she will trust you,
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.

“The light came through the window,
Straight from the sun above,
And so inside my little room
There plunged the rays of Love.”

"Love Itself"
Ten New Songs (2001)
Kontext: p>The light came through the window,
Straight from the sun above,
And so inside my little room
There plunged the rays of Love.In streams of light I clearly saw
The dust you seldom see,
Out of which the Nameless makes
A Name for one like me.</p

“I don't know which side is anybody on any more. I don't really care. There is a moment when we have to transcend the side we're on and understand that we are creatures of a higher order.”

Introducing "If It Be Your Will"
Warsaw concert (1985)
Kontext: I don't know which side is anybody on any more. I don't really care. There is a moment when we have to transcend the side we're on and understand that we are creatures of a higher order. That doesn't mean that I don't wish you courage in your struggle. There is on both sides of the struggle men of good will. That is important to remember. On both sides of the struggle, some struggling for freedom, some struggling for safety and solemn testimony of that unbroken faith which binds generations one to another I sing this song, "If It Be Your Will"

“But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone”

"Suzanne"
Songs of Leonard Cohen (1967)
Kontext: And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone

“You whisper, "You have loved enough,
Now let me be the Lover."”

"You Have Loved Enough"
Ten New Songs (2001)

“And you kissed me
shy as though I'd
never been your lover”

"Song", The Spice-Box of Earth (1961)
