Frank Vincent Zappa, známy ako Frank Zappa bol americký hudobník, kapelník, hudobný skladateľ, producent, gitarista a filmár. Jeho práca bola charakteristická nekonformným prístupom, voľnými improvizáciami, experimentovaním so zvukmi, hudobnou virtuozitou a satirickým pohľadom na americkú kultúru. V svojej viac ako 30 ročnej kariére sa venoval viacerým hudobným žánrom. Komponoval rockovú, popovú hudbu, džez, či jazz fusion, orchestrálne diela modernej klasickej hudby, rockovej opery, práce v štýle musique concrète, absurdity a príkreho, satirického humoru. Je producentom väčšiny z viac ako 60 albumov, ktoré vydal ako sólový hudobník, alebo so svojou skupinou The Mothers of Invention. Je považovaný za jedného z najviac inovatívnych a štýlovo rôznorodých rockových hudobníkov svojej generácie. Frank Zappa režíroval aj celovečerné filmy a hudobné videá a bol autorom grafických návrhov obalov hudobných albumov.

Zappa bol hudobným samoukom, ktorý preberal vplyvy z rôznych žánrov a preto je ťažké kategorizovať jeho hudobné dielo. V mladosti čerpal inšpiráciu od skladateľov hudobnej klasiky 20. storočia ako boli Edgard Varèse, Igor Stravinskij a Anton Webern ale aj z R&B 50. rokov. Klasickú hudbu začal komponovať už na gymnáziu, no v tom istom čase hrával na bicie nástroje v hudobnej skupine hrajúcej R&B. Neskôr sa preorientoval na elektrickú gitaru. V roku 1966 nahral so skupinou Mothers of Invention albumom Freak Out!. Na tomto svojom debute konvenčný rokenrol kombinoval so štúdiovou kolážou spoločných hudobných improvizácií. S takýmto eklektickým a experimentálnym prístupom pokračoval aj naďalej bez ohľadu na to, či si ako základný formát interpretácie vybral džez, rock alebo klasickú hudbu.

Hudobné nahrávky Franka Zappu sú spájané konceptuálnou kontinuitou. Sám ju nazval „Project/Object“. Má množstvo hudobných fráz, myšlienok a symbolov, ktoré sa v obnovených verziách vynárajú v jeho albumoch. Jeho texty často humorne odrážajú jeho odmietanie ikonického pohľadu na zavedené sociálne a politické procesy, štruktúry a hnutia. Zappa bol kritikom bežného stereotypného vzdelávania a organizovaného náboženstva. Zároveň bol priamym a vášnivým stúpencom slobody prejavu, sebavzdelávania, spoluúčasti na politickom dianí a zrušenia cenzúry. Oproti mnohým rockovým hudobníkom svojej generácie neužíval drogy, no podporoval ich dekriminalizáciu a regulovaný predaj.

Počas života bol Frank Zappa vysoko produktívnym, plodným umelcom. Bol rešpektovaný hudobnou kritikou, ale aj kolegami z jeho hudobnej brandže. Ako nezávislý umelec, dosahoval komerčný úspech hlavne v Európe. Ovplyvnil mnohých hudobníkov a hudobných skladateľov. Medzi jeho ocenenia patrí aj uvedenie do Rokenrolovej sieni slávy , či cena Grammy za celoživotný prínos z roku 1997. V roku 2004 časopis Rolling Stone dal Franka Zappu na 71. miesto zoznamu „Stovky najlepších hudobníkov všetkých čias“ a v roku 2011 na 22. miesto zoznamu „Stovky najlepších gitaristov všetkých čias“. Somebody tells you to buy this particularly useless item and you’ll be a cool person. No matter how stupid it seems, you have to buy it. Pet Rocks. Since the cool-person thing is something you learn in school, and since the school business is pretty suspicious and definitely tied up with the government, it makes you wonder whether or not the desire to be cool is part of a government plot to make you buy stupid things.

Kontext: There isn’t anything weird about my music. Weird is a skeleton in the closet, wearing a rubber mask with warts all over its nose, and all that kind of shit. That’s not what I do. The thing that makes my music unusual is that people only hear one kind of music all the time over the radio. It’s wallpaper to their lives. Audile wallpaper. There’s one acceptable beat and there are three acceptable chord progressions. There are five acceptable words: baby, love, tears, yat yat. Just because I don’t deal in those terms doesn’t mean I’m weird. So tell these people: I ain’t weird; I’m rational. I’m a person who can choose to write stuff like that, or choose to write stuff that includes all the notes on the piano played at once, followed by a cement truck driving over the piano, followed by a small atomic explosion. It’s always the bucks, no matter how they disguise it. If you need that sort of assistance to keep yourself together, you may be paying a higher rate to a fake religion than you would to a psychotherapist. Which is not to say that a psychotherapist is going to give you any better value per dollar either. lf you’re going to deal with reality, you’re going to have to make one big discovery: Reality is something that belongs to you as an individual.
