David Deutsch citáty

David Elieser Deutsch is a British physicist at the University of Oxford. He is a Visiting Professor in the Department of Atomic and Laser Physics at the Centre for Quantum Computation in the Clarendon Laboratory of the University of Oxford. He pioneered the field of quantum computation by formulating a description for a quantum Turing machine, as well as specifying an algorithm designed to run on a quantum computer. He has also proposed the use of entangled states and Bell's theorem for quantum key distribution

and is a proponent of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. In 2009, Deutsch expounded a new criterion for scientific explanation, which is to formulate invariants: 'State an explanation [publicly, so that it can be dated and verified by others later] that remains invariant [in the face of apparent change, new information, or unexpected conditions]'.

A bad explanation is easy to vary. —David Deutsch

The search for hard-to-vary explanations is the origin of all progress. —David Deutsch

That "the truth consists of hard-to-vary assertions about reality" is the most important fact about the physical world. —David Deutsch Wikipedia

David Deutsch: Citáty v angličtine

“The quantum theory of parallel universes is not the problem, it is the solution.”

David Deutsch kniha The Fabric of Reality

Zdroj: The Fabric of Reality (1997), Ch. 2
Kontext: The quantum theory of parallel universes is not the problem, it is the solution. It is not some troublesome, optional interpretation emerging from arcane theoretical considerations. It is the explanation—the only one that is tenable—of a remarkable and counter-intuitive reality.

“To say that prediction is the purpose of a scientific theory is to confuse means with ends. It is like saying that the purpose of a spaceship is to burn fuel.”

David Deutsch kniha The Fabric of Reality

Zdroj: The Fabric of Reality (1997), Ch. 1
Kontext: To say that prediction is the purpose of a scientific theory is to confuse means with ends. It is like saying that the purpose of a spaceship is to burn fuel. … Passing experimental tests is only one of many things a theory has to do to achieve the real purpose of science, which is to explain the world.

“Quantum computation is … nothing less than a distinctly new way of harnessing nature”

David Deutsch kniha The Fabric of Reality

Zdroj: The Fabric of Reality (1997), Ch. 9 : Quantum Computers
Kontext: Quantum computation is … nothing less than a distinctly new way of harnessing nature … It will be the first technology that allows useful tasks to be performed in collaboration between parallel universes, and then sharing the results.

“As I understand it, the claim is that the less you use Homeopathy, the better it works. Sounds plausible to me.”
