Yves Klein bol francúzsky umelec považovaný za významnú postavu povojnového európskeho umenia. Bol jeden z najdôležitejších predstaviteľov monochrómnej maľby a zakladateľ nového realizmu, ktorý poskytol významné impulzy súčasnému umeniu.

Tvoril od roku 1947 monochrómne obrazy, od roku 1956 väčšinou v žiarivej ultramarínovej farbe , ktorou vyjadroval mystický univerzalizmus. V roku 1957 začal farbiť predmety pripevnené na plátno . Ďalším krokom boli antropometrie; akcie, pri ktorých na biele plátno odtláčal farebne pomaľované ženské telá. Výrazom ustavičného hľadania spirituality boli experimenty s rozličnými materiálmi a technikami. Tak vznikli roku 1957 takzvané ohnivé obrazy a od roku 1960 kozmológie, obrazy s odtlačkami rastlín a stopami pôsobenia atmosférických javov, napr. vetra a dažďa.

Jeho dielo sa obmedzuje len na osem rokov produktívnej práce, ktorú ukončila náhla smrť. Zomrel vo veku 34 rokov na infarkt. Napriek tomu zanechal výnimočne rôznorodé dielo, od maľby a skulptúr až po konceptuálne umenie a performance art. Wikipedia

I wish to play with human feeling, with its 'morbidity' in a cold and ferocious manner. Only very recently I have become a sort of gravedigger of art (oddly enough, I am using the very terms of my enemies). Some of my latest works have been coffins and tombs. During the same time I succeeded in painting with fire, using particularly powerful and searing gas flames, some of them measuring three to four meters high. I use these to bathe the surface of the painting in such a way that it registered the spontaneous trace of fire.

After the opening of his unsuccessful exhibition at Leo Castelli's Gallery, New York 1961, Klein stayed with Rotraut Uecker (fr) at the Chelsea Hotel for the duration of the exhibition. While there, he wrote the 'Chelsea Hotel Manifesto', a proclamation of the 'multiplicity of new possibilities'
