Yann Martel je kanadský spisovateľ, ktorý sa narodil v rodine kanadských diplomatov. Vďaka tomu už v detstve veľa cestoval a vyrastal postupne na Aljaške, v Kostarike, Mexiku, vo Francúzsku a v Kanade.
Po štúdiách na Trentskej univerzite v Peterborough v provincii Ontário vo veku 27 rokov začal svoju literárnu kariéru. Pokračoval tak v šľapajach svojho otca, ktorý získal v roku 1965 Cenu generálneho guvernéra za najlepšiu francúzku básnickú zbierku. Návštevy a život v zahraničí ovplyvnili do značnej miery jeho tvorbu.
Jeho prvou úspešnou poviedkou bola The Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios, ktorá sa neskôr stala základom pre jeho zbierku rovnakého mena. Roku 1966 vydal Martel svoj prvý román Self . Za svoj druhý román Plavba s tigrom získal cenu Hugha MacLennanna za najlepší román roku a o rok neskôr prestížnu britskú literárnu cenu Man Booker Prize.
V súčasnosti žije v Montreale a pracuje na svojom ďalšom románe.

Kontext: Despair was a heavy blackness that let no light in or out. It was a hell beyond expression. I thank God it always passed. A school of fish appeared around the net or a knot cried out to be reknotted. Or I thought of my family, of how they were spared this terrible agony.
