Stephen Jay Gould bol americký paleontológ, evolučný biológ a historik vedy. Bol jedným z najvplyvnejších a najčítanejších autorov populárno vedeckej literatúry svojej generácie. Väčšinu svojej kariéry pôsobil na Harvardovej univerzite a v Americkom prírodovednom múzeu v New Yorku. V neskorších rokoch svojho života tiež učil biológiu a evolučnú teóriu na New York University neďaleko jeho bydliska v SoHo.

Gouldonovým najväčším prínosom v oblasti vedy je pravdepodobne teória prerušovaných rovnováh, s ktorou prišiel spoločne s Nilesom Eldredgeom v roku 1972. Teória hovorí, že proces evolúcie pozostáva z dlhých období evolučnej stability prerušovaných krátkymi obdobiami kladogenézy, pri ktorých dochádza k vzniku nových druhov. Táto teória odporuje teórii fyletického gradualizmu, ktorá hovorí o postupných, hladkých a spojitých zmenách vo fosílnom zázname. Wikipedia
