Richard Wesley Hamming bol americký matematik, ktorého práca mala mimoriadny význam pre informatiku a oblasť telekomunikácií. Zaoberal sa najmä teóriou informácií, teóriou kódovania a špeciálne samoopravnými kódmi. Je autorom tzv. Hammingovho kódu, konceptu Hammingovej vzdialenosti, atď.
