Maya Angelou, rodným menom Marguerite Ann Johnson bola americká spisovateľka, poetka, scenáristka, filmová producentka a aktivistka.

Najslávnejšie sú jej autobiografické knihy, najmä prvá popisujúca neľahké detstvo a dospievanie černošského dievčaťa v časoch, keď nebolí pre čiernu menšinu vybojované základné práva: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings z roku 1969. Wikipedia

“Without courage we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency. We can't be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.”

As quoted in USA Today (5 March 1988)
Variant:
Courage is the most important of all the virtues, because without courage you can't practice any other virtue consistently. You can practice any virtue erratically, but nothing consistently without courage.
As quoted in Diversity : Leaders Not Labels (2006) by Stedman Graham, p. 224

“Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with shades of deeper meaning.”

“When we come to it
We must confess that we are the possible
We are the miraculous, the true wonders of this world
That is when, and only when
We come to it.”

Maya Angelou kniha A Brave and Startling Truth

A Brave and Startling Truth (1995)
Kontext: p>When we come to it
We, this people, on this wayward, floating body
Created on this earth, of this earth
Have the power to fashion for this earth
A climate where every man and every woman
Can live freely without sanctimonious piety
And without crippling fear When we come to it
We must confess that we are the possible
We are the miraculous, the true wonders of this world
That is when, and only when
We come to it.</p

“I know when it’s the best I can do. It may not be the best there is. Another writer may do it much better. But I know when it’s the best I can do.”

Paris Review Interview (1990)
Kontext: I know when it’s the best I can do. It may not be the best there is. Another writer may do it much better. But I know when it’s the best I can do. I know that one of the great arts that the writer develops is the art of saying, No. No, I’m finished. Bye. And leaving it alone. I will not write it into the ground. I will not write the life out of it. I won’t do that.

“Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise”

Maya Angelou And Still I Rise

"Still I Rise"
And Still I Rise (1978)
Kontext: Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

“A bizarre sensation pervades a relationship of pretense. No truth seems true.”

Maya Angelou kniha Singin' and Swingin' and Gettin' Merry Like Christmas

Singin' and Swingin' and Gettin' Merry Like Christmas (1976), chapter 5.
Kontext: A bizarre sensation pervades a relationship of pretense. No truth seems true. A simple morning's greeting and response appear loaded with innuendo and fraught with implications.... Each nicety becomes more sterile and each withdrawal more permanent.
