Although he claimed to have deserted from the army before being captured and facing court-martial sentencing him to death (which he escaped from), it has been alleged that many details of his autobiography were fabricated. According to director Werner Herzog, Kinski actually came from a financially stable background. Regardless of these controversies surrounding his personal life, Klaus Kinski remains an iconic figure with a dedicated fan base for his acting prowess.
