Julien Offray de La Mettrie bol francúzsky filozof, predstaviteľ francúzskeho materializmu 18. storočia, lekár. Vyšiel z Descartovej fyziky a Lockovho senzualizmu.

Svet chápal ako prejavy rozpriestranenej, vnútorne aktívnej, pociťujúcej hmotnej substancie, ktorej formami sú anorganická, rastlinná a živočíšna ríša, pričom do živočíšnej ríše patrí aj človek. Proces myslenia prislúcha iba človeku, je výsledkom zložitej organizácie človeka a spočíva v porovnávaní a kombinovaní predstáv vzniknutých na základe pocitov a pamäti. Hlavnými príčinami historického vývoja sú osveta a činnosť vynikajúcich osobností. La Mettrie bol stúpencom osvietenského absolutizmu. Bol ateistom.
