Joseph Priestley bol anglický filozof a chemik. Vo filozofii nadväzoval na tradície F. Bacona a Hobbesa a zastával deizmus.

Hmota má podľa neho vlastnosti rozprestrianenosti, hustoty a nepriepustnosti; jej charakteristiky sú určené pôsobením príťažlivých a odpudivych síl. Pocity a myslenie človeka sú výsledkom zložitej organizácie hmoty.

Priestley zavrhoval Lockov dualizmus z pozícií mechanicizmu: napr. asociácie ideí interpretoval ako druh rezonancie.

V chémii sa preslávil ako objaviteľ oxidu uhličitého a spoluobjaviteľ kyslíka. Wikipedia
