John Maxwell Coetzee je juhoafrický a austrálsky autor, držiteľ Radu Mapungubwe a Nobelovej ceny za literatúru z roku 2003, ktorý emigroval z Južnej Afriky v roku 2002. Austrálske občianstvo získal 6. marca 2006. Je dvojnásobným držiteľom Man Booker Prize .

Narodil sa afrikánskym rodičom. Vyštudoval matematiku a angličtinu. Pracoval vo Spojenom kráľovstve ako programátor, štúdium dokončil na texaskej univerzite dizertáciou o diele Samuela Becketta. Stále pôsobí ako učiteľ anglickej literatúry. Vo svojom diele kritizuje krátkozrakú politiku apartheidu vo svojej zemi, ale vyhýba sa jednoduchým súdom a riešeniam. Jeho štýl je jednoduchý, priamočiary, dôraz v jeho románoch je kladený na atmosféru odcudzenia, nepochopenia, z ktorej paradoxne jeho hrdinovia čerpajú pocit istoty. Coetzee priznáva vplyv existencializmu na svoje diela. Wikipedia
