Ide o súčasného a taktiež dosiaľ jediného predsedu Najvyššieho súdu Spojených štátov, ktorý sa narodil po druhej svetovej vojne. Právo vyštudoval na Harvarde. V roku 2005 ho prezident George W. Bush vymenoval za predsedu Najvyššieho súdu USA.

Na základe americkej tradície do jeho rúk zložil prezidentskú prísahu:
