The Golden Bough (1890)
Sir James George Frazer bol škótsky antropológ, religionista a klasický filológ.
Bol zakladateľom odboru sociálnej antropológie v Spojenom kráľovstve. Angažoval sa tiež v oblasti etnológie. Zaoberal sa štúdiom mýtov a náboženstiev antiky a Orientu ako kultúrneho fenoménu. Patril do tretej generácie evolucionistov. Frazerovym vkladom do atropológie bola hlboká znalosť klasickej filológie a problematiky antických civilizácii a náboženstiev. V roku 1886 prijal Frazer ponuku od Williama Robertsona Smitha aby pre Encyklopediu Britanicu spracoval pojmy týkajúce sa "tabu", a "totemizmu". Niekoľkostranové štúdie sa stali základom pre Frazerove diela Totemizmus a exogamie, a Zlatú ratolesť, . Študoval na univerzite v Glasgowe a na Trinity College v Cambridge. Neskôr študoval právo na Middle Temple, ale nikdy ho neuplatnil v praxi. Do konca života bol spojený s Trinity College, okrem rokov 1907–1908, ktoré strávil na Univerzite v Liverpoole.
