Džalál Tálabání bol popredný kurdský iracký politik, zakladateľ a generálny tajomník Vlasteneckého zväzu Kurdistanu , od 6. apríla 2005 prezident Iraku.

Tálabání sa narodil v obci Kelkan na severe Iraku. Už ako štrnásťročný vstúpil do Kurdskej demokratickej strany a v osemnástich rokoch bol zvolený do jej ústredného výboru. V rokoch 1953 – 1956 vyštudoval právo. Na konci 60-tych rokov sa s konzervatívnou KDP rozišiel a v roku 1975 založil ľavicovejší Vlastenecký zväz Kurdistanu . V nasledujúcich desaťročiach Tálabáního PUK a KDP, vedená Masúdom Barzáním, spolu súperili o rozhodujúci vplyv v irackom Kurdistane. Vzájomné rozpory vyvrcholili dokonca v 90-tych rokoch otvorenou občianskou vojnou. Nakoniec sa Tálabání s Barzáním zmierili a po páde Saddáma Husajna išli obidve hlavné kurdské strany do volieb spoločne a získali 75 kresiel v irackom Národnom zhromaždení. Z hľadiska kurdskej národnostnej politiky patril Tálabání k umierneným zástancom federalizácie Iraku a dištancoval sa od hnutia za nezávislý Kurdistan.

Po zvrhnutí Saddáma Husajna v roku 2003 bol zvolený za prezidenta. Stal sa prvým nearabským prezidentom Iraku. Bol vnímaný ako štátnik, ktorý dokázal znižovať napätie medzi šiitmi, sunnitmi a Kurdmi. V roku 2012 utrpel mozgovú príhodu a ešte v tom istom roku ho prepravili na liečbu do Nemecka. Od svojej hospitalizácie v roku 2012 sa už na politickom živote nezúčastňoval. Wikipedia
