Giovanni Pico della Mirandola bol taliansky filozof a učenec, vynikajúci priam zázračnou pamäťou. Odvážnym myslením, stavajúcim sa proti každej autorite, anticipoval renesančný humanizmus.

Narodil sa v šľachtickej rodine v malom mestečku, asi 30 km severovýchodne od Modeny v severnom Taliansku. Zaujímal sa o filozofiu a klasické jazyky, začal študovať právo v Bologni, ale skoro osirel, odišiel do Padovy a roku 1483 do Florencie, kde sa zoznámil s Lorenzom Medicejským a jeho krúžkom mladých filozofov a básnikov Začal sa zaoberať aj kabalou a myšlienkou na spojenie a zmierenie všetkých náboženstiev. Chcel zvolať do Ríma veľkú dišputu, pre ktorú pripravil 900 téz a poslal ich pápežovi Inocentovi VIII. Ten však s dišputou nesúhlasil a dal tézy preskúmať komisii, ktorá niektoré z nich označila za heretické. Keď sa ich Pico pokúsil obhajovať, bol spis roku 1487 cirkevne odsúdený a Pico utiekol do Francúzska. S podporou francúzskeho kráľa sa však mohol vrátiť do Florencie, kde sa spriatelil s radikálnym dominikánskym kazateľom Girolamom Savonarolom a venoval sa hlavne náboženským úvahám. V Savonarolovom kostole San Marco bol potom aj v roku 1494 pochovaný.

Najznámejším Picovým dielom je predhovor 900 téz pre plánovanú rímsku dišputu, ktorú roku 1496 uverejnil jeho synovec pod názvom "O ľudskej dôstojnosti" . Pico della Mirandolla tu vyzdvihol osobitné postavenie človeka, ktorého Boh postavil nad všetky tvory, ktorý však má svoj osud vo svojich rukách a môže sa buď pozdvihnúť, alebo stať sa zvieraťom. Text sa stal manifestom humanizmu a bol mnohokrát vytlačený a prekladaný. Wikipedia

The brutes, from the moment of their birth, bring with them, as Lucilius says, “from their mother’s womb” all that they will ever possess. The highest spiritual beings were, from the very moment of creation, or soon thereafter, fixed in the mode of being which would be theirs through measureless eternities. But upon man, at the moment of his creation, God bestowed seeds pregnant with all possibilities, the germs of every form of life. Whichever of these a man shall cultivate, the same will mature and bear fruit in him. If vegetative, he will become a plant; if sensual, he will become brutish; if rational, he will reveal himself a heavenly being; if intellectual, he will be an angel and the son of God.
