Jan Patočka bol jeden z najvýznamnejších českých filozofov 20. storočia, hlavný predstaviteľ česko-slovenskej fenomenológie a filozofie dejín. Zaoberal sa tiež filozofickým dielom J. A. Komenského, T. G. Masaryka a Edmunda Husserla, českou literatúrou, umením a kultúrou. Patočkovo dielo a jeho osobnosť výrazne ovplyvnili súdobé české myslenie, hlavne v kruhoch nezávislej inteligencie a disentu 60. a 80. rokov.
